Nigel Farage jubile... mais il dit "We love Europe, but we hate the European Union".

I am trying to piece
together the history of my father, Ernest Derrick James who had the
number '1075'. I would love to know if my father is listed in your
book. Sadly he passed away ten years ago and he never
gave me his story. He was, I believe, captured in France whilst living
in Lens or nearby and was held in captivity for the remainder of the
war. I have photographs that were in his possession with the stamp of
Ilag VIII, with some messages on the back and
am in the very early stages of trying to understand what happened. I
and have found minimal information today on the internet but have come
across your book. .....

My reason for contacting you is to see whether you can guide me at all
into researching my father's life, and to see whether there is a copy of
your book in English. I appreciate your time, and hope to hear from
you.
Suite...

This is a recollection of the event by Philip Emerson who was an organizer of the event. Many thanks.
---------------------------------------------------
This
event was two years in the planning. The main points were to
commemorate the 200th anniversary of the beginning of lace manufacturing
in Calais, to promote interest in the historic links between Nottingham
and Calais, and to build support for a National Museum of Textiles,
Costume and Fashion for Nottingham by giving people the chance to visit
the International Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais. About 48 people
came from Nottingham and elsewhere in England, of which 28 were members
of the choir.

I was able to invite a number of
French friends and family including: Christine Loez and her daughter
Julie Rivière who came from Paris for the occasion, Françoise Deguines,
Née Loez, and her husband Antoines, and Colette Young Boot who knew
Bobbie very well (my paternal aunt, Hilda Emerson) - all descendants of
Charles Arnett by his first marriage to Sarah Ann Gilbert. On the Bomy
side, my sister Caroline and her husband Jean Jaques, Ghislaine Bomy
née Vanheeckhoet and her daughter France and her son in law Pascal Leroy
and their three little girls. On the Desseilles side, Michel
Cocquempot a retired lace designer. Marc Greenhill, whose ancestor
Thomas Greenhill also emigrated from Kent to Calais kindly came along.
Thomas Greenhill taught for a while at Charles Arnett’s school in the
early 1840s.

At 10 ’o’ clock on Saturday
morning we were invited to a reception in Calais’ neo-flemish Hôtel de
Ville where we were welcomed by Deputy Mayor Philippe Mignonet who is
bilingual and therefore occasionally answers questions on British TV
news. There were other city councillors, Calais movers and shakers and
a few members of the small British community in Calais. After the
welcome reception visitors had the choice of witnessing the 11th
November wreath laying ceremony, or visiting the iconic 75 metre high
town hall belfry.

Turning off the Place d’Arm onto
the Rue de la Paix just before 3 ‘o’ clock, I was astonished to see
there was already a long queue forming outside the west door of
Notre-Dame de Calais. By the time the concert started thirty minutes
later, the church was full with some people standing at the back. The
audience, in excess of 800 people, was more than at any previous concert
at this annual weekend music festival. I said a few words in French at
the beginning to explain the historic context - viz. two hundredth
anniversary of the beginning of lace manufacturing in Calais, etc,
(see attachment).

The sea of faces made quite
an impression on the members of Choir of Saint Mary’s in the Lace
Market, Nottingham, who had never sung to such a large audience before.
Appropriately enough, since the church was largely built by the English
during the English occupation of Calais from 1347 to 1558, most of the
music dated from the Tudor period sung a capella, with three
pieces evoking the Armistice at the end. The all adult choir including a
number of students from Nottingham’s universities sang as well, if not
better, than most British cathedral choirs, and they got a standing
ovation as they left. The three leading sopranos could probably crack a
wine glass at 5 metres, though they were not put to the test!

After
the concert Councillor Dominique Darré did a tour of the church with
Christina translating. My grateful thanks to Christina and Caroline for
acting as official interpreters and ice-breakers. Also, to Christina for
driving me from Cuckfield to Calais and back. Altogether, a most
remarkable and memorable occasion.
A new feature of the Calais streetscape are the statues of Churchill and de Gaulle at the entrance to the Park Richelieu.

The statues were inaugurated on 24 June this year, yet another expression of the anglophilia that persists in Calais and the mayor's drive to attract more British visitors.

The statues are close to the town's main war memorial and any visitors from Nottingham participating in the wreath laying ceremony between 11:00 and 12:00 on Saturday 11 November will see them.

Present in the picture are Patrick Berthaud the sculptor, Natacha Bouchart (2nd from left) the Mayor of Calais, Vincent Berton Sub-Prefect for Calais, Pierre Henri Dumont Member of Parliament for the Pas-de-Calais, Lady Soames, Nicolas Soames and Lord Llewellyn the British Ambassador..

Notre-Dame de Calais is the only church on the Continent built in the English Perpendicular style. This period came to an end in Calais in 1558 when François Duc de Guise recaptured the town, causing Mary Tudor of England to famously utter "When I am dead and opened, you shall find Calais engraved on my heart." See this and other quotes on Calais.

The church was badly damaged in September 1944 courtesy of the RAF, a few days before the liberation of Calais by the Canadians, and precious religious artefacts were pillaged. The nave transept and tower were repaired in 1945 but the interior work remained unfinished for more than sixty years until work recommenced in 2009.

The people responsible for this work are very conscious of the English heritage and a Tudor garden has recently been planted round part of the church, designed by the English garden historian Caroline Holmes of Cambridge. The Peter Beale nursery has also produced a white rose appropriately named 'Notre-Dame de Calais' which was exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show last year before being planted in the new garden and offered for sale (30€ per plant).

As with all old churches in France, Notre-Dame is the property of the town. Catholic religion is practised but the church is also being used as a splendid venue for concerts, conferences and exhibitions.

Beginning in 1816 when Webster, Clark and Bonnington smuggled a loom from Nottingham into Calais, Calais became a centre of lace manufacturing, eventually outgrowing Nottingham. Now only three or four firms are still making Leavers lace.

Dentelle de Calais ® (Calais Lace) is a registered and protected trademark (like Camembert de Normandie), exclusively reserved for lace made on Leavers looms by master lacemakers of Calais and Caudry using a unique method of knotting between the warp and weft, which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. See history of Calais lace.

Next time you pass through Calais, stop and visit Notre-Dame de Calais and the fabulous International Museum of Fashion and Lace. There is also a very interesting war museum inside the WWII Nazi communications bunker in the Parc Saint Pierre, opposite the spectacular town hall.

This is the story of my teenage years during the turmoil of world war II. My narration starts in Eastern Poland in the summer of 1939 when I was fourteen; it ends in Southampton England in the month of march 1948 when I was 23.

In the summer of 1939 I was 14 years old, a young girl full of life, looking ahead for the future, heedless of the dramatic events that were about to fall on Poland and the world (see my narration of my summer 1939 holiday). The second world war started on September 1. Germany invaded Poland
without any declaration of war, intent on recovering the territories lost in 1919 at the end of world war I, and of reinstating the status quo ante, ie. when Poland had been wiped out of the map of Europe by the third partition (see history of Poland: three partitions). The other powers that had partitioned Poland ie. Austria and Russia were associated in the events. Austria had been annexed to Germany in 1938 (Anchluss); Russia invaded Eastern Poland on 17 sept ember 1939.
History was repeating itself a hundred and twenty five years later....

This blog and Bill Forster's book and memories of Calais at the beginning of World War II, led to our being contacted by descendants of Reginald George Rainey (*) and Tom Sarginson (**). Rainey appears on the photo of internees at Tost Ilag8. He is first left on second row from top. The descendants are Rainey's grandson and great nephew. Sarginson appears on this photo first left of the top row. I am reproducing below freely adapted extracts of email conversations with them (italics are mine).
(*) Rainey worked for Brampton chains
(**) Sarginson worked for Courtaulds (les filés de Calais). I told his story previously in the blog thanks to his daughter Jeanne Gask. Read more...pratclifhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01855445960855974402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274157976528264738.post-46972783202911269562015-03-18T18:23:00.001+01:002015-03-18T18:24:14.155+01:00Délégation Territoriale Paris DT 75 - afmd
