Commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the beginning of lace manufacturing in Calais.

This event was two years in the planning. The main points were to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the beginning of lace manufacturing in Calais, to promote interest in the historic links between Nottingham and Calais, and to build support for a National Museum of Textiles, Costume and Fashion for Nottingham by giving people the chance to visit the International Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais. About 48 people came from Nottingham and elsewhere in England, of which 28 were members of the choir.

1817-2017 histoire de la dentelle à Calais

A l’occasion du 200ème anniversaire du début de la fabrication mécanique de dentelle  à Calais à l’aide d’un métier Leavers passé en fraude de Nottingham (*), une réception aura lieu à l’Hôtel de Ville de Calais à 09h30 le samedi 11 novembre.

(*) C'était le début de la révolution industrielle sortant d'Angleterre après la révolution française et les guerres napoléoniennes qui avaient mis l'Europe à feu et à sang. La fraude se réfère au protectionnisme en Angleterre qui a prévalu jusqu'à la fin du 19è siècle et le traité de Cobden Chevalier .

Il y aura aussi  un concert de musique chorale qui rendra hommage à l’époque Tudor anglaise ainsi qu’à l’Armistice 11 novembre 1918. Il sera interprété par le chœur renommé de l’église Sainte Marie de Nottingham, à 15h30  en l’église Notre-Dame de Calais. Les portes ouvrent à 15h00 et l’entrée est gratuite.

Bronze statues of Churchill and de Gaulle at the entrance to the Park Richelieu.

A new feature of the Calais streetscape are the statues of Churchill and de Gaulle at the entrance to the Park Richelieu.

The statues were inaugurated on 24 June this year, yet another expression of the anglophilia that persists in Calais and the mayor's drive to attract more British visitors.

The statues are close to the town's main war memorial and any visitors from Nottingham participating in the wreath laying ceremony between 11:00 and 12:00 on Saturday 11 November will see them.

Present in the picture are Patrick Berthaud the sculptor, Natacha Bouchart (2nd from left) the Mayor of Calais, Vincent Berton Sub-Prefect for Calais, Pierre Henri Dumont Member of Parliament for the Pas-de-Calais, Lady Soames, Nicolas Soames and Lord Llewellyn the British Ambassador..
